How to Weatherproof the Clarity AC Adapter

When thinking about powering your Clarity Node-S through the AC adapter instead of its solar panel, it's important to consider how you will weather proof the power connection.

Ideally you will be able to connect your AC adapter directly to an IP rated outlet enclosure. In some instances this may not be possible, particularly if you are placing the Node to far away from the outlet or need to power multiple Nodes.

Always make sure to follow applicable electrical codes and safety rules

Connecting a Single Node

For these cases Clarity recommends the use of a waterproof protective enclosure. Similar to the one shown below.

The protective enclosures should provide a waterproof opening for the ac cord on one side and the extension cord on the other. These devices are typically low cost and can be found at a number of retailers.

Recommended Specifications

When looking for an outdoor enclosure we recommend the following specifications:

  • Minimum rating of IP54, if you're environment is especially rainy or stormy IP55 or above would be preferred.
  • Wall mountable, while these enclosures are designed to be safe on the ground purchasing one that can be wall mounted will provide a secure enclosure installation. This will help to prevent accidental movement of the enclosure that could cause the device to be unplugged.
  • Suggested dimensions approx. 9"L x 4"w x 4"d. The enclosure shown above is 8" x 3.5" x 2.5" and the adapter just fits. Allowing for additional space will make it easier to feed the cords through the provided openings in the enclosure.

Connecting Multiple Nodes

When connecting multiple Nodes consider using a large enclosure that will fit an entire power strip such as the one pictured below.

Recommended Specifications

When looking for an a multi-device enclosure we recommend the following specifications:

  • Minimum rating of IP54, if you're environment is especially rainy or stormy IP55 or above would be preferred.
  • Wall mountable, while these enclosures are designed to be safe on the ground purchasing one that can be wall mounted will provide a secure enclosure installation. This will help to prevent accidental movement of the enclosure that could cause the device to be unplugged.
  • Suggested dimensions approx. 13"L x 9"w x 5"d. The enclosure shown above is 12.5" x 8.5" x 5" and provides ample space for the power strip and multiple adapters.

Drip loop

A drip loop is crucial in outdoor electrical connections to prevent water from flowing along the cable and into the electrical equipment or outlet, which can cause serious damage, short circuits, or even pose a fire hazard. By forming a U-shaped loop in the cable below the point of connection, water is directed to drip off at the lowest part of the loop instead of continuing towards the electrical components. This simple yet effective measure enhances safety and longevity of outdoor electrical installations by guarding against water ingress, corrosion, and electrical failures, ensuring a safer and more reliable power supply in outdoor environments.
